Definition

A leaderboard is a public ranking of top players by some metric — global rank, regional rank, kills, win rate, etc. Most modern competitive games show top-500 or top-100 leaderboards in their UI. Climbing the leaderboard is the long-term goal for serious ranked players. Public leaderboards also enable smurf/booster detection by surfacing improbable progression.

Example

"Top-500 leaderboard — that's the goal this season." The player aims for the top regional bracket.
