MMR

Matchmaking

Definition

MMR stands for Matchmaking Rating. It is the hidden numeric rating most modern games use to pair players, calculated separately from the visible rank tier. Riot Games, Valve, and Blizzard all use MMR variants. MMR rewards consistent performance and updates faster than visible rank, which is why a player can climb tiers quickly when their MMR is much higher than their displayed rank.

Example

"My MMR is way higher than my rank, that's why I'm getting +30 LP per win." The player's hidden MMR exceeds their visible tier.
