Matchmaking

Definition

Matchmaking is the system that assembles players into teams or opposing matches. Modern matchmaking uses skill ratings (Elo, MMR, Glicko-2, TrueSkill) plus latency, queue time, party size, and behavior history. The best matchmaking maximizes match fairness and minimizes queue time — two competing objectives that every system has to trade off.

Example

"Their matchmaking is broken — I'm Diamond getting paired with Bronze players." The speaker is complaining about a perceived skill mismatch.
