smurf

Matchmaking

Definition

A smurf is a high-skill player on a low-rated account, usually a deliberate alt account created to play against weaker opponents. The term originated in 1996 when Warcraft II players Geoff "Shlonglor" Fraizer and Greg "Warp!" Boyko used the names "PapaSmurf" and "Smurfette" on alt accounts. Smurfing is officially against the terms of service in most ranked games.

Example

"That Iron player just headshot our entire team — he's a smurf." An apparently low-ranked opponent is performing far above the lobby's skill level.

Origin

First attested: 1996, Warcraft II — players Shlonglor and Warp!
